Amethi MP Rahul Gandhi on 13th febuary 2007 laid the foundation for Footwear Design and Development Institute (FDDI) here.The FDDI will train 500 students in the first semester after commencement of its sesssion six months from now.Addressing a gathering, Rahul said he would try to get three more institutes of a similar kind in his constituency in the coming month.He said with the setting up of the FDDI and National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) in the nearby Rae Bareli district, students would not have to venture out for higher education.The proposed NIFT unit would be set up at a cost of Rs 20 crore and offer a total of 69 seats, including nine for NRIs.In the beginning, it would run two courses: Fashion and Lifestyle Accessories, and Fashion and Apparel. The students will also get hostel facilities.''Companies would come for campus placements and students would not have to go out for job opportunities.'' Rahul said it was his idea to connect Uttar Pradesh with the rest of the country through computer and education.Speaking on the occasion, AICC president and Rae Bareli MP Sonia Gandhi said we have to train our students to compete in a highly competitive environment. ''Students should get ready to face the competition on the highest level.'' She noted that it was the responsibility of the government to train students to get job opportunties in new areas.Interestingly, Rahul today drove his mother Sonia to Lalganj, Rae Bareli and Fursatganj.
